Band Interviews
This months interview is with the powerful metal hardcore band Death of Narnia.
HMS: So what’s the name/genre of your band and who plays what?
Mya – Death of Narnia: We're Death of Narnia a five piece metal/hardcore band from Halifax
Mya on vocals (me) Jodie on guitar Bob on bass Luke on drums Pannie on lead guitar
HMS: Interesting name how did it come about ?
Mya – Death of Narnia: Luke and Jodie were at Jodie’s house one afternoon and they came up with the name, way before the film came out its annoying when people think the name NARNIA is going to about the film or the book 'chronicles of Narnia', when its not.
Narnia is also a Russian Girls Name, so we thought 'Death of Narnia' and her Death isn’t Negative either its like she died to save something meaningful and bring a different form of life to the world to make it a better place. It also came from our Christian beliefs.
HMS: How long have you played together as a band?
Mya – Death of Narnia: We’ve been a band since November 2005 and we’ve had a few line-up changes but now I think we’ve got our complete line-up.
HMS: Have you guys played many gigs ?
Mya – Death of Narnia: We’ve played over 30 now since January(when we started gigging) We’ve been to London, folkestone, leeds, bradford, hartlepool, harrogate, huddersfield and many more..
HMS: What has been your best gig?
Mya – Death of Narnia: Probably May 14th 2006, at Leeds cockpit with Bring Me the Horizon, Test Switch Isolator, Clone The Fragile and Fell Silent, it was immense! The show was soldout! Their were hundreds of kids, it was amazing because people actually were into our set, and they were dancing n shit. It was the first time we actually played in front of a huge crowd. We met some amazing bands and people that night. It was mint.
HMS: Who are you main influences collectively?
Mya – Death of Narnia: From Kittie to BMTH to Job for a cowboy + many more
HMS: Any on the scene or unsigned acts?
Mya – Death of Narnia: Probably Bring Me The Horizon, Clone The Fragile and Eyes Set To Kill
HMS: What is the main drive for Death of Narnia as a band ?
Mya – Death of Narnia: To produce something different to what everyone else is doing and just to get people to enjoy themselves when listening to our stuff. We love it when kids dance to our stuff too! That’s how we determine whether we have had a good gig or not. So you kids getcho asses down in the pit!
HMS: What do you think of the music scene in Huddersfield?
Mya – Death of Narnia: I think this past year Huddersfield Music scene has exploded with new raw acts from the area, its good to have somewhere to play and it’s also a great place to go see bands. Bar120 is the place to be when looking for live music, and a great night out.
HMS: Do you have a demo or any studio time in the pipeline?
Mya – Death of Narnia: Actually in a few weeks we are recording a new demo as we need something that will make people think... "woahhh, I wanna go see them live" its going to be great because they are total new tracks that no ones heard and its different to what people expect from us. Expect more- Melodic riffs, Singing, Growls and beat downs!
HMS: A lot of bands fell pressured into getting a deal or 'making it' when really a lot can be gained from taking it slow and producing some good music, and of course enjoying yourself, what’s your opinion on going big or making it ?
Mya – Death of Narnia: To be honest, if we get big we get big, we just want to have fun and make some amazing songs that people will love during the process, so lets see what happens ay!
HMS: What’s the future for Death of Narnia?
Mya – Death of Narnia: We have been told this year is going to be our take off, it’s going to be our year. So at the moment were keeping are heads down writing new stuff and we plan to do some serious gigging and towards the end of the year..perhaps get on a few tours. One thing we have promised each other. We are not giving up, no matter what.
Thanks for the interview. Mya - Vocals - Death of Narnia
